Running through the stats and specs of Nikon’s new telephoto lens for bokeh-lovers

The new NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is a lightweight, compact lens. Match it with the NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 and the NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 and you’ve got a superb f/2.8 ‘trinity’ at an affordable price. For fans of great, smooth bokeh, those who want to get closer to their subjects, video makers who don’t want to be weighed down by a heavy zoom and anyone who wants to experiment more and expand their photographic creativity, this is a go-to lens. Mount: Nikon Z mount

Nikon’s Z mount, designed for mirrorless cameras, is wider than the competition, and a wide mount means more light (and more detail) hitting your camera’s sensor.

Focal length: 70-180mm

Great for getting close to the action, the 70-180mm range of the full frame (FX) NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 can be used for portraits, landscapes, travel, events, sports, wildlife and more.

Maximum aperture: f/2.8

The large aperture makes bokeh easy – even when you can’t get close to the subject – to make your shots really stand out. That f/2.8 aperture also allows you to take sharp shots of moving subjects such as animals and sportspeople at fast shutter speeds without having to increase the ISO sensitivity.

Angle of view: 34°20′–13°40 on a Nikon FX camera and 22°50′–9° on a DX camera

At 70 mm, the lens is capable of taking great travel shots and landscapes. Zoom to 180 and create some drama with a single subject.

Diaphragm blades: nine, with rounded opening

Great bokeh needs a great diaphragm, and with the rounded opening it will be buttery and smooth.

Lens construction: 19 elements in 14 groups

Advanced optics make the lens incredibly compact and easy to use all day long.

Minimum focus distance: 0.27 m (at 70 mm), 0.85 m (at 180 mm)

Shoot distant subjects and then get right up close.

Dimensions and weight: 795 g and Φ83.5×151 mm

Being 565 g lighter and 7 cm shorter than the NIKKOR Z 70-200 f/2.8 S VR, the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is both compact and lightweight and designed with superb portability in mind.
